Harris Park

Sydney’s suburb of Harris Park can be found approximately 24 km west from the CBD. It forms part of the city of Parramatta’s local government area. Some suburbs lying close to Harris Park are Granville, Parramatta, Rosehill and Camellia.

This well-established suburb dates back to the early 1800s when it became a farming community. According to the 2006 census, the number of residents who live in Harris Park is approximately 4,400, which doesn’t include tourists. This is also one of the rare suburbs where the males outnumbered the females at that time, that is, 54.6% and 45.4%, respectively. Harris Park’s early history interestingly relates that land was granted to a convict, namely, James Ruse. After developing Experiment Farm, he eventually sold it to a surgeon named John Harris. Later, his surname was immortalised when the suburb was named after him.

This catholic school was founded in 1930. It was managed by the Sisters of Mercy until 1976 when a non-member of the sisterhood was appointed as principal. Our Lady of Lebanon College is also in Harris Park as well as the Australian International Performing Arts High School. The adjoining suburbs have a plethora of schools for children of all ages and cultural traditions.

Rosella Park is a popular spot for families living in Harris Park. It has a children’s playground, picnic areas and seats for visitors to relax on, after an energetic walk. The park was given its name from rosellas. These were brightly plumaged parrots that visited the area. The local inhabitants named these birds ‘rose hillers’, which was derived from Rosehill, being Parramatta’s original name. After a while the words merged together to become Rosella.

Newcomers to Harris Park who need to learn to drive can receive driving lessons North Shore.
