Give me a “P”

Once you have your L-plates, it is time to start preparing to get your P1 licence. The first step is to get a copy of “A Guide to the Driving Test” which is available on the RTA website or at your local motor registry. Make sure that you familiarise yourself with the contents before you even climb into a car.

In order to qualify to take your P1 license test, you will have to meet the following criteria:

  1. You must be at least seventeen years old.
  2. Log Book – 120 hours of driving practise including 20 hours of night driving. The logbook must be signed by both you and your supervising driver – if you have been taking drivers lessons Sydney, your instructor must sign for any hours spent with them.
  3. You must have had your learner’s license for at least a year.

You need to book your test in advance either through your local motor registry, through the national RTA call centre or online. Keep in mind that these spots fill up quickly so book as soon as you feel you are ready.

On the day of your test, aim to arrive a little early or you could stand the chance of losing your space. Bring the licence fee and proof of identity with you and also bring your logbook. If you are missing any of these, you will not be allowed to write the test. Whether you are making use of the car of the driving school inner west or your own car, make sure that the car is clean – the windows should be spotless – and that everything is in order. Do a full vehicle check to make sure that there are no broken lights and that all lights, indicators, etc are working as they should. Check that you have enough petrol and make sure that your tyres are at the correct pressure.

Keep in mind that the P1 license is not a full license so there will be restrictions applied to it. First and foremost amongst these is that you may not have any alcohol if you are going to drive. In terms of driving infractions, it is four strikes and you are out – having four penalty points means the suspension of your licence. You may only drive a car and you must keep to a maximum speed, where allowed, of 90 km/ hour. You and any passengers must be wearing seatbelts at all times. The number of passengers you may carry is restricted. You must also note that you are not allowed to use your cell phone at all – even if you are using a hands free kit. Stick to these rules and you will be well on your way to getting your full license.
